Bayer and Ginkgo Bioworks to Create Biologicals Powerhouse
Ginkgo Bioworks to acquire West Sacramento R&D Facility
On April 22, 2022, Bayer announced that Ginkgo Bioworks will acquire the West Sacramento Biologics R & D Facility in a transaction, projected to close by the end of 2022, subject to final negotiation and regulatory approvals.

Gemini Bio Expansion
Learn more about the facility expansion effort
Gemini Bio Products is undergoing a second expansion of their state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that produces cell culture medias and cell solutions used in COVID-19 testing and vaccinations. Gemini has invested $15 million to improve 4,500 sf. of the 25,000-square-foot facility they built in 2019 consisting of lab and clean room suites, cold storage, and administrative space. The expansion will improve Gemini’s capacity to supply biotech and pharmaceutical customers.
Better Meat Co.
Better Meat Company relocated its headquarters to West Sacramento in 2019 and received $9 million to finance construction of their first commercial R&D and production facility and hire more staff. Better Meat Co. sells plant-based food blends that can be added to ground meats to cut costs, add nutrition, and produce meat products more sustainably. Building and economic development staff assisted the company with site selection, building permits and local hiring for the expansion.
